I have been a part of ASMBC since 2017. I was planning on becoming a solo mum and found the group so supportive, nurturing and informative as I began my journey.

When I had my twins the support I gained when they were born premature was nothing short of amazing. Woman I’d never met talked to me when I was scared and shared in my happiness when we got to finally come home.

We attended our first weekend away a few years later and it was then that I met some of the most wonderful woman I am now proud to call my friends. We have laughed, cried supported and I love watching our kids grow together. Our kids have that connection of being a part of a solo mum family and that brings solidarity and friendships from all over Australia.

It’s one of a kind and the dedication of those that make the group what it is is inspirational. No words are enough to thank the ASMBC tribe but I am glad my family is part of it.

I joined ASMBC in mid-2016 when my donor conceived daughter was about six months old. Since then, my daughter and I have developed fabulous friendships with other mothers and children from this group that live all over Victoria.

We have been on many camping trips over the past Seven years which are always fairly relaxing (for the mums) and fun for the mums and kids.
The benefits on being a member of this group are enormous. The camping getaways, being able to connect with other solo mums about similar challenges we might be experiencing, letting our kids see that other families are similar to ours and simply getting out and about and having fun at the events.

When I first joined this Facebook group there were approximating 700 members, now there about 4,000, which says a lot in itself.

When I first became a solo mum I had never even heard the term. I started the process and had my daughter, and then a few years later my son. It was a lonely journey by myself. I never knew anyone else who had done this.

Then I worked with another lady who had gone down the same path and she told me about the solo mums group. I came along to a few gatherings and met other solo mums and their children and I found my tribe.

I have made some amazing friends and know that I am not alone in this journey to motherhood. The online community is only a click away and meet ups at Christmas and other organised events have been wonderful.

This group has helped my sanity and made me feel a huge sense of belonging. And my kids know that there are other donor kids like them. So grateful to be a part of this amazing group of strong and independent women.

My name is Danielle and I have been a member of the ASMBC for over 6 years now.

I was a member before I was pregnant and it helped relieve a lot of stress during the whole process, just to be able to speak to someone, and bounce ideas off made the journey that much easier.

Having a community like we do is amazing, sometimes the conversations are very serious and informative and other are silly and gives everyone a big laugh.

I have made friends that will be there forever and for that I am eternally grateful.

The community and the Facebook group that Michelle created, and many others volunteer to run behind the scenes, has been an incredible support to me over the years. I started out my journey unsure if I was making the right decision, and the community was there for me every step of the way on my unexpectedly long and painful journey to have my children.

They have been generous with their advice and time, empathetic and warm during my darkest hours and shared my joys. The time the admins take to vett people’s entry into the Facebook group has ensured it has remained a safe space where nothing is off limits to talk about. Such spaces are rare these days, with many starting groups trying to commercialise, gain followers and promote their wares, but this group has always had the community it serves at heart.

While I don’t attend as many events these days due to kid commitments, I look back on the events I have attended fondly and have made lifelong friends.

I joined the solo mums online group when I was still deciding if it was a path I wanted to take. I read a lot of posts from members and did some research until I had a good understanding of the highs and lows of life as a solo mum and the paths to get there.

I decided to go ahead and now several year later I am lucky to have two donor conceived children.

We have remained part of the group and I’ve met some wonderful women who have become good friends. I appreciate the supportive community online and through the friendships I’ve made.
