What is ASMBC?

We are a nationwide support group for women who, for various personal reasons, including fertility issues, have decided to become Solo Mothers By Choice to form their families without a partner.

We are a nationwide support group for women who, for various personal reasons, including fertility issues, have decided to become Solo Mothers By Choice to form their families without a partner.

As you know, this decision comes with a number of challenges that can range from dispiriting to disappointing.

It’s no understatement that, at ASMBC we understand exactly what you are going through. That understanding is underpinned by our founder Michelle Galea, a solo mother through IVF, who founded our group in 2013.

Michelle, Victoria’s 2024 Mother Of The Year and Member of the Victorian Department of Health Donor Conceived Advisory Group, saw ASMBC rapidly grow into the thriving community it is today: embracing over 4,000 families across Australia and New Zealand.
Your supporters here at ASMBC believe solo motherhood is a valid, empowering, and joyful path to parenthood. We are here to support, advise, and counsel Solo Mothers By Choice who have decided to have a child on their own — with the help of a donor, adoption or fostering.

Our Mssion
and Values

You don’t need to be told that the way to solo motherhood can feel isolating, desperate and discouraging to varying degrees. But it doesn’t have to be that way. This became very clear to our founder Michelle Galea and our first small, personal support group that grew into ASMBC.

A Village Of Your Own

Here we’re building a village where solo mothers and their children can grow, thrive, and be seen and appreciated for what they have achieved.
And better believe it: it’s a massive achievement requiring courage, determination and persistence to become a Solo Mum By Choice. ASMBC does more than counsel and advise, as vital as these aspects are.

Solo But Never Alone

We also place major emphasis on the real life that surrounds you and your child: including casual park playdates, getaways and annual retreats, new friends and contacts for heartfelt chats, milestone celebrations and more; we’re always here for you. Whether you’re just starting out or deep in the parenting trenches, you’ll find your people here.

Local and National Events

As members of our Facebook community, you have access to a platform designed to help you actively foster and coordinate local connections through more than thirty like-minded sub-groups across Australia and New Zealand. All ASMBC groups are supported by our dedicated, experienced team.
