A double-donor recipient is a parent or parents who have a child created using both a sperm donor and an egg donor. Double-donor offspring are becoming increasingly common for both solo parents and couples. There are many reasons an intended parent or parents decide to recruit both a sperm and egg donor including age related infertility, social infertility, low sperm count, low AMH or other fertility issues.

Choosing the donor treatment path is a big step. It has implications for you, your family and, of course most importantly, for your child.
Any form of fertility treatment can be stressful. Donor conception presents you with additional decisions and issues to consider both now and in the future.

Finding a Sperm and an Egg Donor

Donor Sperm

There are many opportunities in Australia for people to find local sperm and egg donors. For those people who don’t know someone in their immediate circle who may be able to help them, reaching out to a fertility clinic may be the best option. For sperm donation, some people decide on a more casual arrangement where sperm donation can happen privately via artificial insemination. For more information on donor sperm, please click here.

There are also opportunities to find a sperm donor from overseas. However, the laws around altruism and anonymity vary from country to country.

Donor Eggs

For egg donation, there are sometimes people who have eggs in storage who may like to find a person or couple to whom they would feel comfortable donating. For those people who don’t know someone in their immediate circle who may be able to help them, reaching out to the broader community via advertising can be the best option available. However, it is important to understand that advertising of this kind is subject to its own unique set of legal requirements.

Rights and Responsibilities

As the parent(s) of a donor conceived child, you are the legal parent(s) and appear on the birth certificate. There are registries and organisations around Australia and the world that can help link your child to their donor.
Similarly, donors can find out more information about you, and depending on the donor agreement (different in each country), they are often entitled to both identifying and non-identifying information about their donor offspring. Consent is required prior to the release of identifying information.
